Cassie Floan
Art students and the alternative Yancey Evening School students of Mountain Heritage High School
The Toe River Arts Council was designated as coordinator for the ornament creation for the North Carolina 2013 National Christmas Tree display. Both Art and Yancey Evening School students from Mountain Heritage High School were selected to work with local artist, Cassie Floan, to create narrative ornaments depicting scenes familiar to the mountainous region of the state. Students worked with paper silhouettes and natural objects to make multi-layered pop-up sculptures. Some students added details using acrylic and watercolor paints in addition to natural objects found throughout Western North Carolina. All used their imagination and personal connections to the area to portray their culturally rich environment. Mountain Heritage High School serves all the students in Yancey County.
