New Mexico

Sweeney Elementary

The ornaments which decorate the New Mexico 2014 Christmas tree are made by the 5th grade art students at Sweeney Elementary, in Santa Fe, NM. The Dream Catcher is a sacred symbol which is used by many Native American tribes across the country; it is used as a symbol of protection in the dream world. As New Mexico is surrounded by over 19 Pueblos; the Dream Catcher was chosen for the National Ornaments to represent the beautiful and strong Native American heritage which is found here in the Land of Enchantment. The materials used, such as the leather, antique glass and semi-precious stone beads, as well as the sinew and feathers- were all selected to best represent the authentic works of native art. Please extend a giant Thank You to Ms. Kendal’s 5th grade art class, and all of the hard work from the ladies at ARTSmart Santa Fe, who made this project such a success.
