New York’s ornaments were created by both teens in the Gateway-Longview Residential Education Changing Attitude and Behavior Program and by students from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. The artists hoped to capture both the natural and urban landscapes found in the state of New York. Gateway-Longview was inspired by the diversity of the water at Niagara Falls, creating images of the water from different viewpoints. LaGuardia Arts students researched iconic landmarks of New York City to represent the five different boroughs. The two artists collaborated and decided to represent the state from top to bottom. In order to create cohesiveness, both designs include the state bird, the Eastern blue bird, linking the various sources that bring the state of New York beauty, vitality and diversity. Gateway-Longview is a child and family service organization in Buffalo, NY that has been providing care, education, counseling, and support to children and families in Western & Central New York since 1890. LaGuardia Arts is one of the original four specialized high schools in New York City and has a dual mission to provide students with strong a strong education in both academics and the arts.
